I have now changed my email address for the site to kevin@sv650.org although email sent to sv_650@yahoo.co.uk will still be accepted into the future and I'll check it often.

Thanks to Chris in the US for his help!

27/09/00 -  BUYING ADVICE IN THE UK - Thanks to David (David.Pitts@cwcom.co.uk) for his experience...

Just a short note to all you potential new sv650 buyers. When I went to sign up for my new bike ( sv650 -faired version ) I just haggled a little bit & managed to get a free? chain & lock, I went home & friend called me a pillock!!!!, suggested I call around to see what was cheapest price I could get, (had already paid £100 depoisit,ARGH!!).

Anyway after a few calls, a place down south offered me a price of £4200. This was £650 cheaper than I had just agreed to pay but I would have to go down to collect it
After much thought ( about 5 seconds) I called my dealer to cancel order & lose my depoisit, if I could save £100 & fork out about £100 to collect it, I would still be about
£450 better off. Now this dealership was actually quite good ( Colin Appleyards, Leeds ) and we had already bought my son's bike from them, when I told him the price I could get from this other place he wanted to see how close he could match it, after a bit of haggling we agreed a price of £4400 to include also a full oversuit/drysuit and
the chain & padlock, which together was worth £110, so by still getting the bike from my local dealership it would save me the £100 it would have cost to collect it , so in the end I got it for the price of £4190.

The moral here is don't just accept it. HAGGLE!

PS Getting my insurance with the bike cost me the grand total of £185 comp!  which goes to confirm what I said in the Forum yesterday, the insuring the SV is much cheaper than insuring 600cc in-line 4's like the R6, CBR600 and ZX-6. A main dealer told me this was a major reason for many of the SV sales he'd had.

27/09/00 -  DONATION TO MENCAP (UK) - You may remember that I had ridden the National (Navigational) Rally on July 1/2 to raise money for the MENCAP charity here in the UK.  Jorge @ Renegade Exhausts offered a donation for every exhaust sold at the time I was collecting. I have now donated the £45 (plus £5 from Steve S in the US) to MENCAP and enclose the following 'thankyou' email just so you all know I didn't spend the money on beer instead!  (it's doesn't take £50 to get me drunk  btw)..

Subject: Thankyou for donating to MENCAP

Thank you!

Dear KEVIN D JONES,

Thank you for your donation of £50 which will help us continue our work in offering help and support to people with a learning disability (mental handicap).

It means a lot to us that you support our work, and more importantly more children and adults will be able to lead much fuller and happier lives, thanks to many supporters like you. Over 200 families a week have a child born with a learning disability that's over 100,000 families a year in need!

On behalf of Daisy and all those families that will benefit in some way, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your kind gift.

Yours sincerely,

David Scott-Ralphs
Director of Fundraising

So, to Jorge & Tomoko etc at Renegade and to Steve S in the USA....thankyou very much.  See here for the original offer on 26/08/00

25/09/00 -  1/8TH MILE PERFORMANCE - I won't make a habit out of copying text from the Forum section but I know lots of you ask about SV650 performance and this goes to show that over a short distance the SV is more than adequate.....see the General Forum, posting 668 for more information and follow-up's (thanks to Dan for this).....

I recently took my 00' Sv 650 to the drag strip, and to my surprise she ran awesome. Got a lot of funny looks as I pulled up to the staging
lights. Ran the bike three times against three differant bikes

First run was against a ZX-11, I ran a 8.499, he ran a 7.986. I got some attention after this run!!

Second run was against a CB750, I ran a 7.904 (this was a holeshot), he ran 9.101!!

Third run I knew I would lose!! It was a R1, I ran a 8.386 not bad, he ran a 9.564!!!

He said his back tire wouldn't grip, to bad you still lost!!!
These three runs gave me lot more confidence in the bike, and those three guys realize that the Sv650 is no turtle. Sure they would have stomped me in the quarter mile, but we weren't on the quarter mile track. I will beat the ZX-11 next time!!!!

Not bad for 650cc! Well done...

25/09/00 -  HAPPY CUSTOMER - This is Chuck (tunedport@att.net)....and yes, I know I'm indulging myself..... ;- )

Just thought I would drop a line a say thanks for having a sight dedicated to the SV. I have owned my bike for 4 months, and 6000 miles later I'm pleased to say that it has been extremely fun. I have completed a few modifications which has boosted appearance, in my opinion, as well as performance and drivability.  Your site has been the SV-Resource Meca that I use on a weekly/monthly basis. I have been well informed of the mods, problems, and merchandice available thanks to this site. I'm not sure how many people don't know this site exists, but anybody that owns an SV should drop by here on a regular basis. Enclosed are a few pictures of my SV. I have added the Exhaust, Turn-Signals and Clip-ons. I have also jetted the carb to match the exhaust.

Since I live in the US, I have tried my best to make the un-faired twin as "sleek" as possible. The clip-ons are great, the exhaust rumbles nicely, the jetting,
shimming and drilling of the carb have made this bike very responsive.

Keep up the good work....it has paid off for me! ;-)  Good...but your images didn't arrive OK, couldn't see or download them..sorry.

19/09/00 -  WATER IN THE FUEL = RESULT!!  - This from Jon (jon@prause.dk) in Denmark.....

I had the problem of water in the fuel as well....

Since the problem is well known in this forum (thanks Kevin) i contacted Suzuki Denmark in order to get a fix on warranty (still got 5 months back). They claimed they never heard of the problem, but agreed to take a look at the description of the problem found on this site (I found about 10 in less than an hour). 3 days later i delivered the bike at the local garage who fixed it at Suzuki Denmarks request. The only thing i had to pay was the rejetting/shimming i had done while the bike was already taken apart.

The really great thing about this: SUZUKI DENMARK HAS RECOGNIZED THE PROBLEM AND IT WILL BECOME AN OFFICIAL FIX ON ALL SV650'S IN DENMARK - all thanks to this site.  good news, pleased we could help!!

19/09/00 -  UPDATE TO SPEED & RPM CALCULATOR - This from Steve (sfoster@tenuteq.com.au).....

The program is at the bottom, just click on the link. I wouldn't mind some feedback and if anyone knows some acceleration formulas I could use to work out acceleration in gears I'd appreciate them as I wouldn't mind find out what affect sprocket/tyre changes have on that too.

19/09/00 -  SV650S IN 2001 LINE UP FOR USA! - Roger (sfoster@tenuteq.com.au) confirms the good news for US readers!

The official US Suzuki site just announced the 2001 lineup, including the SV650S! It took them two years to pull it out, but they finally did. It looks like a new red and (new?) blue, but no yellow. Rob Chappell makes a good point when he remarks that it will greatly improve the availability of aftermarket parts (windscreens, huggers, etc. for all North American SVS owners (grey market or otherwise).

Here's the link:   http://www.suzukicycles.com/dmeeting/dmeetfs.htm

15/09/00 -  SPEED & RPM CALCULATOR - Contact Steve (sfoster@tenuteq.com.au) for this great looking program...

Not sure if you'd be interested in this or not but I've recently written and speed and RPM calculator so I plugged in the figures for the SV650S and here is the graph.

If anyone wants the program then email and I'll be happy to send it out to them. As an aside I plugged in the figures for the 750 monster and the theoretical top speed for both is exactly the same. The speeds are in KMH but there is an option to change to MPH and the mouse pointer will give you the exact reading at that point on the graph, obviously the greater the screen resolution the more accurate the mouse reading.

Any questions drop me an email.

12/09/00 -  RACE BIKE WANTED FOR USA - Contact Todd (ripper@rconnect.com) from One Way Racing...

Wanted, SV650 race bike. Any condition.

10/09/00 -  JHS RACING 750cc UPGRADE KIT - The originator of the upgrade kit sold by JHS RACING is Dr Barry Seevers (srdco@earthlink.net). Here he answers some questions I put to him regarding dyno charts/HP, cost of kit compared to the purchase price of the 'budget' SV  and reliability following Dr Barry feeling that us 'Brits' were giving JHS RACING a hard time. I explained this was not the case, readers of sv650.org simply wanted hard information, and evidence, on which to base any purchasing decision they may be considering. This is Dr Barrys reply......thanks...

In regards to dyno charts, I should have supplied them to you myself. Here is how I get My Hp readings from a superflow 901B dyno about $97,000.00.

I am at 3700 feet above sea level ( I will get lower readings than at sea level ). Motorcycles are hooked directly to the dyno by chain. Housed in a room with fresh air pumped in, exhaust is piped out no contaminants in the dyno room.

Now for Hp. stuff.
1. Calif. model 650cc 58 Hp. at 8,400 rpm 30 Ft lbs. Torque
2. 49 State model 650cc 64 Hp. at 8,550 rpm 33 Ft lbs. Torque Both 49 state and calif. models used stock exhaust
3. 49 State model 750cc 79 Hp. at 8,600 rpm 53 Ft lbs. Torque Two Bros. pipe
4. 49 State model 750cc 85 Hp. at 8,750 rpm 55 Ft lbs. Torque M4 pipe
5. Full Comp engine 827cc bored&stroked 137 Hp. at 11,850 rpm 79 Ft/lbs. Torque Comp. 2 in 2 pipe $11,200. USD
6. Full Comp engine 800cc big bore 133 Hp at 12,150 rpm 68 Ft lbs. Torque Comp. 2 in 2 pipe $10,800.
7. Full Comp engine 750cc Big bore 116 Hp. at 10,700 rpm 63 Ft lbs. Comp. 2 in 2 pipe $10,200.
8. Full Comp engine 700cc 107 Hp. at 10,700 rpm 57 Ft. lbs. Torque Comp. 2 in 2 pipe $ 9,800.

Now price, all my parts are made of the best material available. The lightest, strongest and expensive metals. There is a lot of labor that goes into a 750 cyl.( bore cyl. heat barrels fit sleeves into barrels then cool down barrels then deck cyls. O-ring cyl. at last bore and hone to 87+.0025 ) a lot of work. On 800 and 827cc engines,
I have to bore cases to fit the big bores.Time adds up on this too.

I get $ 80,000. for a full kited GSXR 750 Suzuki Super bike Engine 158hp Yosh gets $92,000 for the same but gets 167hp. $12,000. for 9 hp. Ferracci gets $ 110,000. for a 170hp. Duc We did not put all that money in our pockets, just to develop parts for SV engines I blowup 8 engine spent $ 78,000 of my own money plus months of over time and weekends to bring your customer the Best Products for their SV's. In the US SV is $ 5,800 USD We call them the cheep super bike, for a total of $23,000. you can turn your SV into a Ducati, Harley,Buell,Honda hawk eater.

Now for reliability I have sold 127 kits in the USA and Canada 3 came back to me seized.
1 came back because of a bad oil pump.
2 came back because improper jetting.( Customer jetted it them self ) I know of 32 bikes are everyday go to work bikes, and some of these kits are year and 1/2 old.

Kevin I hope this clears up some issues feel free to E-Mail me.

And to complement Dr Barry's email I received this separate email from James Holland (jhsracing@lineone.net)

yes we are very please to be the sole uk importer of srdco/usa range of sv650 tuning parts. with this alliance we will be able to supply an even greater amount of not only parts but also tuning information.

09/09/00 -  HELP? - No name (RennBP@mfr.usmc.mil) but looking for help..

I would usually write to the forum, but, I need some serious help.

I had serious motor problem with my Canadian SV, this began in may. And it came out of the blue. I thought it was due to my riding style so I didn't think much about it. The problem is still being taken care of 2 1/2 months later but Suzuki Canada is going to pay for it. But, it was a major pain in the ass. And I have lost much of my riding season. I know, I know cry like a baby.

But, here's the thing. A guy that I work with bought one because he liked mine so much. He is starting to get the same kind of noises that mine started with. Canada does NOT want to pay for this. We need help!!!!!! In a bad way. Any suggestion's, any small tidbits of info anyone can give will help. Thanks.

Firstly, the Forum does offer 'serious' help and many read and digest the comments made there.

Secondly, if you told us what the problem was then maybe we could offer some help and see if others had experienced the same thing. Email me again and please provide more details.

Thirdly, if yours in being corrected under warranty and your friends is proved to be the same fault then surely a precedent has been set and you/your friend can use that in argument to get the problem resolved under warranty.

10/09/00 - Here's Brian's update....

Sorry about the vague email, I was a little pissed off and a bit flustered.

The problems: I blew my motor with about 11,000KM on it. Right before the engine went I started to hear a weird knocking noise. It sounded like there was something hitting the bottom of the gas tank. I thought it would be ok to ride home. It wasn't, I made it about 1/2 way then it locked up and a couple of seconds before it locked up it sounded like metal on metal so I pulled over.

I called a buddy with a truck and I got the bike to the Suzuki shop and they took one look at it and said this will not be covered under warranty because it was not the US model. That was not the answer I was looking for. I called Suzuki US and the referred me to Suzuki Canada. Turns out, there was a recall on my bike (oil plate) that had never been taken care of. Because of this, they said they would pay for it, and they are. Suzuki have said failure related to the oil plate is rare and only probable on bikes experiencing very high revs for long periods...do you race yours???

I have been waiting for my bike for over 2 months. They kind of have me in a weird situation because the dealership can't answer any of the questions I ask them i.e.. when am I going to get my bike back, what caused this, will it happen again? I was beginning to think that I would be ok once everything was fixed, then my friends (who has the same bike) bike started making the same noise that mine was making the day it blew up.

His problem: We called Suzuki Canada and they said they would NOT pay for his to be fixed because there was no recall on his bike. The reason is because
he is not a Canadian citizen. The only way he can get it fixed is to take it back to Canada. Whether there was a recall or not on his bike (it must be a '99 model then?) doesn't matter, or shouldn't. A bike still covered by warranty should be covered for any major failure caused by design faults whether it was subject to recall or not. Hayabusa owners are experiencing big problems with Suzuki in the UK after rear sub-frames are snapping when loaded with luggage systems...no help to you bought just thought i'd mention it.

My question: The US model and the S model are no different below the skin. They are still Suzuki products. Shouldn't they stand by there product no matter where it was bought? If anyone knows anything about this please let me know. All my comments are not based on any specific knowledge, they are just opinions. If anyone knows fact in relation to these issues please email Brian or myself..thanks.

It just seems like they SHOULD have to fix the problem. But, I am not sure how it all works. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

08/09/00 -  CAGIVA RAPTOR POWERED BY SV650 - Andy (papercup@clara.net) kindly sends the URL for our information...

didn't know if you knew about this...  I had heard of the SV650 powered Cagiva but hadn't seen details....I note it's a fair bit heavier than the SV with the same power output...

08/09/00 -  JHS RACING TUNING DEVELOPMENTS TO BE REPORTED SOON - Garys (webbs23@lwebb28.fsnet.co.uk) bike is having the treatment ...we await feedback..

A full report will be posted on jhs racing very shortly as my machine is part of there on going tuning development for the fourth coming sv650 race series. hope the racing goes well Gary, what series is it in?..

(A full price list of all parts offered by JHS Racing can be seen on their website)

08/09/00 -  SV BATTERY PROBLEMS - More information here from Dave (david.deans@gecapital.com) who confirms what many have said abou the quality of the battery fitted as standard to new SV's......thanks very much..

First of all, the site goes from strength the strength. Thanks. no...thank you...

After my battery gave up the ghost, I telephoned my dealer (Alvins in Edinburgh), and was able to answer most questions regarding a knackered battery. Initially they told me that I required a new battery, but did not mention a swap. After a couple of pauses to invite them to swap the battery under the warranty, with no response, I mentioned this site, and straight away was told to bring the battery in together with the warranty booklet. ..let the power of sv650.org be with you.... ;- )  I am reasonably confident that I would have got a replacement free of charge, as I have had good service from the same dealer in the past.

Whilst in Alvins, listening to a discussion, it would appear that they have changed only 3 batteries this year, BUT, the workshop knew about the problem, as Suzuki had been in contact. so, SUZUKI GB, why is it so difficult to get information on the issues that we constantly raise on this site when in many cases you've probably informed dealers anyway?!!!! aarrgghh....!!!! If anyone works for a dealer and can confirm this is how things work then drop me an anonymous email, maybe I've got it all wrong? I stand to be corrected...

If anyone out there, is not offered a replacement battery under warranty, they should consider contacting their local County Court to issue a Small Claim summons on the dealer if they own the bike. If it is on finance, they should write to their finance company registering a "Satisfactory Quality" complaint (remember your finance company lease you the bike until the last payment is made). I for one would be glad to send details of my problem and the way I was treated to anyone considering action, and I am sure that fellow SV riders would send the same. This information can be shown in court in a bundle. I am sure that any dealer would settle before the
litigation date. seeing as Dave obviously knows what he's taking about if any of you want to take up his offer after having exerienced similar problems then get in touch with him and let me know how you get on...  thanks Dave for the offer of help to fellow SVers in the UK...

Thanks again for the site.

06/09/00 -  ADJUSTABLE NEEDLES, NOT ALL ARE! - Thanks for the reminder Michael (michaelk@BabyCenter.com)...

hey Kevin -- just looking at the "current data" section, and must point out (since your site is int'l) that not all sv's come with adjustable needles. Here in California they don't, and I think that's true for all of the USA. Our fuel screws are coverred with brass plugs also. EPA making life difficult for us :(

Would have posted to the forum, but since this article appeared on "current data" page, i thought i'd pass it on to you. no problem...thanks.

05/09/00 -  VERY NICE COLOUR SCHEME ON FRENCH SV - Thanks for the images Pascal (prautois.pascal@free.fr)...

I send you two pictures of a SV 650 see in a french'shop.

05/09/00 -  CAGERS - An positive experience from David (DavidGeorge@georgecom.freeserve.co.uk)...glad to hear you're OK..

Just a note to let you know that my faith has been restored in the general public.

I managed to drop my Sv big time 2 weeks ago (5 hours before flying away on holiday...wife wasn't best pleased). I was taking a left hander and the front slid out on an oily double manhole cover in Halifax. Bike hit a traffic island and, to my surprise, so did I. Guess what...4 car drivers stopped to help...one of them was a trained first aider who made me sit down and take stock of things. Three other guys picked up my SV which was a struggle to move as the forks were bent, the gear shift snapped off and the clutch lever inoperable and moved it to the side of the road. One guy helped me to operate my mobile 'phone which I'd forgotten how to use in the heat of the moment.

A lady from a local shop "The Pine Studio" in Halifax came over from the opposite side of the road and said that they'd look after my bike until it could be recovered...apparently it happens all the time...doh! The drivers who stopped then stopped the traffic and crossed the carriageway with the SV and then one of them actually gave me a lift to the local hospital where, to my surprise, he stayed with me until I was seen by a doctor. Oddly the driver was on his way to by a new helmet!!!

Needless to say I got away lightly with a broken collar bone. My SV wasn't so lucky with a lot of left side damage done...the main thing being the forks which impacted the traffic island when the bike was sliding on it's side.

I think the main reason I've emailed is that I've heard a lot of bikers slagging off car drivers and so on. I'd like to say they're not all bad and some of them went out of their way to help me out which I will be forever grateful for.

Final few points...Kevin at All Bikes in Rochdale collected my bike and then put together a comprehensive repair plan at a very reasonable cost (gulp!) and turnaround time so a plug for him. I was wearing full leathers which, judging by the state of them, saved me from a great deal more injury as did my Shoei helmet which thankfully, unlike my skull, has been thoroughly trashed.

Thanks also to you and the site contributors who have kept me sane during my period of recovery. Any messages of sympathy much appreciated at my email address. Plus if anyone has any blue 2000 SV left side bits I'd love to hear from them.

05/09/00 - MYSTERY FAIRING, ANOTHER UPDATE - Thanks for try Marty (mhuffman@mail.ci.newton.nc.us)...this relates to this post...

AND ALSO ON THE SUBJECT....this from Mark (mark@markbrantley.com)...thanks very much..

I saw the message dated 30/8/00 in the Current Data from Steve regarding the mystery fairing on the blue SV... I think this might just be the source.. Check it out... Lots of different fairings to choose from... Pricing doesn't appear too steep either...

05/09/00 - UPDATE ON HELPHIRE (UK) SITUATION - Mark (mark.spencer-smith@wcom.co.uk) has eventually got somewhere...

PS Remember my email about the Helphire problem ? yes..see it here Got it sorted ... they eventually agreed to back off on threat of court nasties and gave me what I
was asking for: a letter discharging me from all liability for the disputed period of hire. What a mess though. I wonder what may have happened to someone less legally minded than myself ? even more grief..

01/09/00 - ADJUSTABLE NEEDLES REPLY  - The SHOUTER (t.v.r@freeuk.com) replies....thanks..

In answer to earlier posting yes the sv comes with adjustable needles Hope this is of interest. SVS yr2000 UK

01/09/00 - PRICE LIST  - I don't know your name (saleh@biochem.ou.dk) but I think you're asking a little too much...

Danish student crashed on my sv650s, and I would like you english people helping me. I would like to have somebody to send me (saleh@biochem.ou.dk) a price list on all parts of the bike.

The prices in denmark totally high.

in advance I appreciate all mails. so would I ! If anyone knows where I can find what's being asked let me know....should be challenge enough!

30/08/00 - MYSTERY FAIRING (AGAIN) - Steve (Steve.Scheinberg@healthcentral.com), like others, wants to know more about this fairing...

I saw a picture on your images archive page 1 that I will attatch.. The email that is next to this series of pictures is a dead email. Im wondering if you have any information on where I can purchase this front fairing? You have several pics of this fairing in yor images archives, so Im really really hoping you can help me out.

Here's the mystery image

Steve, many have asked about this fairing and I've been able to find out nothing. Once again, if anyone can help identify the manufacturer of this fairing please get in touch as there have been many enquiries about it....thanks.

30/08/00 - REJETTING AUSSIE STYLE - Greg (greg@cockatoocomputing.com) send us this information...

The SV650 site is a great resource - only just recently discovered it. I noted that in the FAQ/how to, with rejetting carbies there seems to be a whole heap of information on shimming carby needles. This perplexes me somewhat as my SV needle has a clip with 5 slots. In standard form the clip was in the middle position on the needle.

After installing a Yoshi pipe, I just had to drop the clip down one slot, no need to add shims or whatever. This is what I have done for the past 30 years in adjusting low-mid range jetting. My only thought was that perhaps only the Australian (SV650S E-24) model has a needle with an adjustable clip. Can anyone confirm this? Ummm...I can't, can anyone else??

The SV service manual even shows the needle with a clip & alternative positions. I have attached a scan of the page from the manual which shows the SV carby - this may of help for the FAQ pages.

The SV is a great bike - however the front forks are nothing to write  about. My next project is re-valve the forks.

btw: the yoshi pipe + adjust the needle transform the SV - it just goes - awful hard to keep the front wheel on the deck!

29/08/00 - MY RENEGADE VISIT

This is a thank you from me to Jorge, Tomko, John, Alan, Ozzie and all the others I've not named for the day spent at the factory on Monday. It was great to see the place where it all happens and meet some familiar and not so familiar faces. My twin low level looks even better today and I've been out this evening as I was getting withdrawals after only a few hours!

It was also good to meet Hammy, Andy, Alison, Vladimir, Zico, Robin, Paul, Mike - I've bound to have missed a few people...sorry if you're not included.

I'll be posting the notes I made from the day within the next few days along with images to illustrate. For now I've just posted most of my images from the day in the Images Section with no corresponding text.

Once again thanks Jorge and keep up the good work!
