22/10/01 Battery problem from Paul Wood. Paul.Wood@fs-europe.com

Hi John, I thought you could possibly post this on your web site, I've got a problem with my SV650S. Whenever I go for a ride for more than say 40 mins and stop the engine then immediately try to start it, the battery is completely flat, leave it 20 mins or so and then there is just enough life in the battery to start it again. I recently had it checked out at MCC they can not find anything wrong with it at all, the rectifier, battery, alternator are all fine! Does anyone else have this problem if so what is it? Thanks Paul. Bit odd this. Is the battery really flat. Try blipping the horn or turning on the lights and seeing how bright they are? Sounds like a heat related problem, perhaps getting to another component, like the starter relay. Is heat getting to the battery? Does the engine try to spin? If not do you hear a click from the started relay? Perhaps you should go for a 40 min run and then head straight to MMC and get them to check out the battery whilst its warm.  There has been some issues with the SV battery. Check archives for more info. Meantime if anyone else has some ideas, I'm sure Paul would be keen to hear from you.   John (the battery is my number 1 suspect.)

22/10/01 From Cycle Center of Denton. I took the liberty of contacting Cycle center on your behalf. A few people had contacted me asking for the part number of the new adjustable fork caps mentioned by Rob of svrider.com. Here is their reply. John

John, The caps are on backorder but they seem to ship one or two to us occasionally. The U.S. part number is 51351-10D80 and they are priced at $25.79 ea. Let us know if we may help.

 Thanks J Roberts Parts Specialist Cycle Center of Denton CycleCenter@earthlink.net Local.......(940)387-3885 Toll-free...(888)808-1251 FAX........(940)383-1012 .

I'm assuming that the UK part number will be the same. I can't see why there should be a variation, unlike some components such as lights, but check anyway.  John

19/10/01 Scott Shumaker  shumakerscott@hotmail.com has sent in this small mpg. I have to agree it does sound good.

John, I have posted about the Street fighter exhaust. You have it listed under the exhaust file. I have since made a 15 second drive-by video, it is about 350k in size. The video quality isn't the best but the audio came out great. I have attached it with this email. Thought you might want to add it to the web page. Keep up the good work! Scott Shumaker

12/10/01 A word from my competitor (only joking Rob) with an update on fork caps and fairing info

Hey there John, good going on keeping SV650.org alive - I would have hated to loose the competition ;-) First I would like to answer you on the fork caps from a 2002 - yes they do fit all previous SV's and I believe the cost from Cycle Center of Denton was $35 U.S. each. They were taking orders a couple of weeks ago. I am sure any Suzuki dealer could get them though. I also wanted to let you know about the new SVS fairings I have made with the help of Armour Bodies here in Canada. More information and photos of the kit can be found at http://www.2wheeljunkie.com. You could place this in the "current data" section or in the "fairings" section that would be very cool. Thanks and talk to you later, -Rob Your online resource for everything SV! =-=-=-= http://www.svrider.com =-=-=-=

9/10/01 From Stephen Spiteri sspiteri@mps.com.mt

Hi there John, Thanks for the continuation of Kevin's work and dedication to this site. You're doing a great job (thanks, I do my best). As indicated on the bike's tank I am running the SV on unleaded. However some friends told me that switching to leaded fuel would be beneficial to the bike in better lubrication (thus less wear and tear) and more power (I can only assume they mean for the valves, that's what the lead was for). Locally both types of fuel are priced the same and as the bike is used only on Sundays, very little harm would be done to the environment (although there is debatable whether unleaded is in fact environmentally better). What are you guys running on? (I run on unleaded, it's cheaper. Leaded fuel was replaced by LRP in January 2000. Japanese bikes have been designed to run on unleaded for years, so reliability shouldn't be an issue) Please write and let me know. On an other note, I've just purchased a Renegade high level carbon oval competition can and it sounds great. The power is up on all the rev range and the finish of the product must be seen to be believed. I ordered the can last Friday and it arrived overseas to Malta (where I live) on Tuesday morning complete with instructions and complementary t-shirt. They even included an extra flange in case the original can would be needed again (for VRT maybe? (vehicle inspection?)). What service. Installation is a half hour job. All you guys who thought of installing a Renegade but hesitated, just do it. You'll be owning a brand new bike after installation and wouldn't want to stop turning that throttle. Wouldn't be a proper bike without one. My brother Simon who also has an SV installed a Micron system. Nothing wrong with it, but after he saw and heard mine he was almost jealous. The thing is fab. (another happy customer for Jorge)

8/10/01 Beefing up the swingarm from S650vtwin@aol.com

I was after beefing up the rear swinging arm on my sv it currently has just over 70 bhp@ rear wheel and I would like to bolster this department up before i go on to the 750 kit also any ideas if a aftermarketbanditt 1200 racing rear shock with remote will fit. Blimey, we do I start? Firstly are you sure that the swingarm needs beefing up? What do the racers out there do? Beefing up the swingarm might be a waste of time if the frame flexes. Why do you want a 1200 shock? The 1200 weighs a lot more than an SV and is designed with that in mind. Before you do anything speak to some experts, who know about setting up a bike. Also go to them with a specific problem, that they can analyse and suggest a solution for i.e the bike ties itself in knots when I nail the throttle. The SVrider web site is racing orientated, they may be a good source of information. If you are based in the UK then someone like Motorcycle Technics could be a good place to start. I have no relationship with this company, even though there is an Ad on the first page.  John

8/10/01 A question from Omar Yacoub omr@prodigy.net

John-- I want to know if the adjustable preload caps on the 2002 unfaired models can be screwed into the previous generation forks. My Sv is a '00 and it would be nice to have that ability. Thanks. ---Omar, in Brooklyn NY.  The short answer is I don't know. Looking at the pics below suggests that Suzuki have simply modified the fork caps. I think it's unlikely that they've done a complete re-design of the forks on what is a budget priced bike. I wonder how the price compares to some of the aftermarket caps that are available. I suppose the only way to find out is to speak to a friendly dealer and see if you can try them on a return basis. If anyone tries this, let me know.

8/10/01 New owner Lisa from Texas has an '02 SV  TXsvrider@go.com here are some shots

Hi John, Congrats on taking over the site. I'd like to send you a few pics of my new 2002 black SV. I live in the states, Texas to be exact. One of the pics gives you a shot of the preload adjusters that have been added for '02 and another gives an idea of the color. It isn't quite a solid black but it has some metallic speckles. I tried to get the pics down to a decent size without messing them up too much. I've only had the bike 1 day and put 50miles on it before my butt started to hurt. Corbin, here I come! Thanks, Lisa

8/10/01 Jock Addison has been having some wiring problems. james.addison@bsp-uk.com

John, I thought I would add to the list of potential short circuits on the SV that people should be aware of. The wires that run from the alternator to the rectifier / regulator pass over one of the mounting points for the right side of the seat surround (whatever it is called!). Mine had rubbed against the bracket and then shorted out. This is an un-fused circuit. The wires from the alternator to the rectifier had completely melted and also taken out the ones from the rectifier to the wiring loom that then shorted out and drained the battery. Just to cheer me up, the charging circuit now only pumps out 12.2 v with the lights on, so it is probably a bit knackered (I have not had time for a serious look yet). I'll post this on the forum as well but I thought I would send it to you directly to put in the current Data section so as many people as possible get to see it. Cheers Jock. It's definitely worth checking the routing of the loom under both side panels and inside the left rear bodywork just forward of the rear light. Not much fun being caught out with dead electrics in winter. Sods law says that it'll happen in a dark wet night in the middle of nowhere.   John

05/10/01 Changes for 2002 from Iain  rephaim@hotpop.com

Hiya John, I might be a bit behind in whats already been discussed but I found an article today at motorcycle.com with mention of changes to our beloved SV. The article stated "For starters, one of the major complaints about the SV650 gets rectified. The addition of preload-adjustable front suspension means that both aggressive and not-so-aggressive riders can now enjoy the SV to its full potential without resorting to expensive suspension modifications. The SV650S will also receive the new 41 mm front forks." All I can say is WOOHooo!....I was thinking of upgrading my suspension but may end up upgrading to a new 2002 model when they arrive here in Australia. Any of you lucky enough to test ride one of the 2002 models be sure to lets us all know how the front-end feels...no harm in trying a few stoppies *smirk* just wait tilll you get out the dealers line of sight :P Cheers, Iain

I was aware of the fork changes, but I'm sure it's been reported here. So just for those that may have missed this and are thinking of buying in the near future.  I'd be curious to know what else has been altered for the 02 model. Kev and I are going to the NEC bike show on 16th Nov, so hopefully we can get a good close look at bring some pics back to this site.   John
