I do not know if you are aware of this event? not this one but I did a North Wales BikeSafe weekend training event last year and it is highly recommended, I learnt a lot and it was fun

Bikesafe Birmingham is jointly organised by Birmingham City Council Road Safety Unit, West Midlands Police and the Advance Training providers in the city including the commercial companies and the voluntary sector of Birmingham Advanced Motorcyclists and RoSPA. The aim of the day is to promote safe riding and will also have local retailers in attendance.

Might be of interest to SV riders in reach of the Midlands who are interested in riding safety? I aim to go and will be at the A38 Bassetts Pole McDonalds (Tamworth way) 
at 10:00am for Breakfast before making the final 12 mile ride into Birmingham

It arrived a couple of days later and they even mailed me some instructions so I could fit the can myself. This process only took about 1 hour ( and that was with me being really careful ). It also only took limited tools ( a socket set and decent hacksaw ) and limited mechanical ability ( i.e. me ! ). The can sounds superb and the fact that I can refit the original is another bonus. I was a little apprehensive at tackling the job myself but the chaps at Renegade gave me a few tips and it really was a piece of cake ! 

All in all I was well impressed with the service and the product.

PS - Just a quickie .... do you know what the penalty is for having a race can on my bike ? If I get pulled will I get points on my license or a fine ? Can the police make me take it off ? Do you think I will get a lot of hassle from the Cops ? I believe that you can end up with points (3?) on your license but in many cases you are given a 'warning' to ensure you have a legal can fitted. This mean putting the original back on and going down the station to get a bit of paper signed (this is only the process I've heard about...not been through it myself). I have had no hassle at all from the police but then again I don't use excessive speed or pull wheelies down the high street. My view is that you won't get pulled for an aftermarket can unless you're doing something else to attract the attention of the police i.e. speeding or riding like a prat (or unless it's *really* loud - your Renegade won't be)

It's about time that we nailed down some details for the ride-out on 13th May. After reviewing the suggestions so far I'd like to sort something out in southern central England....i.e. here

I know that some of you wanted to go to Margate, some to Brighton. In trying to ensure somewhere central so that as many people can attend as possible I think this area is a good comprise. It allows riders from London/Kent/Essex etc to travel West and people from the West Country to travel East, all meeting somewhere North of Salisbury roughly in the area shown on the map. The roads are quieter than many areas nearer London.

Can someone please come up with a start-place, route and end-place in this area? Please.....  I will post further details when someone steps forward to help out.

I have an outstanding issue with the hugger which I'll relate on the forum when I finally get to the bottom of things!!!

I just received my K&N Filter from my local Dealer (I'm the first one in Belgium they told me), Quality Bikes in Belgium . It didn't come with a cleaning kit , but it is pre-oiled and ready to install. I got 10% of the price, ( 3500BEF- 10% = 3150 BEF = 78 Euro) that makes £ ..... (please fill in for me Kevin, thanks). is one Euro about 68pence? If so then it's about £53...

The K&N information on the box told me that it only needs cleaning between 50.000 and 100.000 miles, and it does let almost double the amount of air through than a standerd one. I'm saving up for a Dynojet kit ant it will probably be installed next summer. Does the K&N filter and dynojet kit work on a 700cc kit for the SV? (I'm considdering on getting one)

And I promissed you a update on the BT010. Well after 4500Km the rear tire has 3.5 mm left from the indication mark in the groove. the front only has 4000KM and it has 3mm left, is that normal? Doesn't the front tire last longer than the rear (weird isn't it, but you can do front wheelies any time on  wet and dry roads). They both have great grip when cold and warm.

I asked for information on the paint. It was because some kid dropped his bike against my SV( I hate kids who do this). Result -> didn't have my SV back for 4 weeks :-( because the paint wasn't similar to the original original ->->->-> And it had to be painted completely (lower fairing too). I'll send you some Pics when I get them.

PS: I have the original windscreen and exhaust for sale, they are both undamaged

I placed an advert to sell my sv ( 30/01/01). I sold it to the first person who saw it, thanks for that. no problem...

I'd just like to offer the following experience. I bought a vtr1000 firestorm, expecting it to be an sv, only more. I''m not sure i've done the right thing, though. Its obviously, bigger and heavier, also faster outright.

For day to day travel and just sheer fun, the sv is a better bike and faster A to B, due to the combination of all its parts working in  harmony ( handling, weight, brakes etc) May be back soon ?? you know you're always welcome, sometimes you just have to try these things unless you'd never know for yourself.

Here are some of the sv's mods that I've done to make life on the road easier not always the prettiest but a good compromise. 

I started with the National Cycles Deflector LX screen, It was laying around in the garage off an old GSX1100G great bike. Not quite the look but it made fast cruising a possibility noisy and a bit of turbulence, I lifted it, raked it, bolt upright no difference except looked crap. The hand guards make life warmer for the digits and keeps wingmirrors off the levers, look better than muffs. 

Mirrors were forced on me when I moved the bike forward and it rolled off the side stand I had a bunch off keys in my hand and it dropped in slow motion against the garage wall, popped the mirror off over my head, so I thanked The Lord profusely. Busch & Miller MPS replaced them, there good. Renntec luggage rack replaced the hand hold, very good. Straight swap for the hand hold. 

Remus high level road pipe, still louder than the stock with the baffles removed and it's legal. The engine guards have saved the bike from serious damage with the odd drop and one where a C**t in a Ford Puma pulled in front of me and slammed on the brakes I did a stoppie on his back fender then slid down his rear. New Bars and a brake lever plus some scratches could have been worse, he sodded off, if I ever find that guy ............! That led to Renthal bars low gold and high red, looked great ride was terrable changed to near stock slightly lower, good. As a result of that I changed the pads to EBC HH good for the first 3000 miles but then went off, lots of pad left. 

Had good reports for Dunlopad DP anyone tried them? Rear hugger MPS special, ok like to be able to stop the crap off the chain flying every where though, need a
longer tongue on the chain guard, any suggestions. Heated grips Newtronic Daytona never be without them, don't buy Oxford their crap! 

So finaly the latest, SimpsonDetour Warrior fairing www.simpson-detour.co.uk  with twin Hella 5.75inch lamps with Philips "Vision Plus" bulbs 55/60W, brilliant light Regalautobulbsltd@btinternet.com  £10 each, cars actually move out of the way and the wind blast is acceptable for such a low screen. Baggalux tank bra & bag the best, Stand is Harris very good with bobbins, oh and a cheap waterproof luminous watch strapped to the triple clamp very handy.

I thought these pictures might be of interest to you or perhaps people visiting your fantastic site, they show the rear lower section of the aluminium frame between the shock absorber bracket mounting point and the stand mounting point.

the bike has caused me more stress than anything I have ever experienced before (it's a very very long story) but I wouldn't swop it for anything. this is the first I've heard of this problem..

I wonder if any of your readers would be interested. I am organising a track day. It started off as just a few mates on TL's but has now grown to over 60 riders on everything from TLS, TLR, RSV, Ducati's and several SV's. The price is £75 if we get 80 riders, £95 if we get between 60 and 70. I am hoping you can help me to fill the last 20 places left. The day is designed to make novices or first timers welcome and  comfortable. Experienced riders are welcome but I have purposely avoided the
squid type rider to keep the day accident free.

Regarding my posting in the Forum I have received quite a few number of e mails from fellow sufferers - genuine UK, parrallels, and other countries - so the problem is widespread and many SV owners will be wondering whats wrong with their pride and joy.

Carb Icing :

As the temperature outside approaches freezing, many SV owners report misfiring etc. It appears this is due to the carbs icing up. Symptoms are as follows :- 

Around 5 degrees and the bike starts great but after about 5 minutes (after the choke has long gone) a misfire at idle to around 4000 revs develops. This usually goes away after 15 minutes of running.
Approaching zero and the misfire becomes dangerous as the bike suddenly cuts out below 4000 revs. You will be able to start it but it will juggle from one cylinder to the other, refusing to idle and possibly backfiring. Again it may clear up after 15 minutes of riding.
At zero the bike will not run below 5000 rpm. You will be forced to stop and park up. The carbs take about 10 minutes to thaw out and if lucky the bike will run better after this period.
Below zero and the you will find yourself parking up every 10 minutes trying to thaw the bike out. After 4 attempts it usually clears but misfiring could stay with you the rest of the day. Your throttle may also stick on at around 4000 rpm during the thaw out period. If you have problems, park up for 10 minutes and see if it goes away, 
if it does your bike is one of the affected.

Already I have a few tales of near misses, including myself and it is only a matter of time before serious injury or death occurs. The bike is known to stall at up to 60mph whilst changing gear leaving the rider with the choice of dropping the clutch or coasting to a stop, often in rush hour traffic on freezing roads. Approaching junctions is a nightmare as you try to keep the bike revving at 5000 rpm whilst downgearing and braking at the same time. It's no joke every single morning.

It appears that carb heaters are available, some bikes have them as standard (in which case you will be wondering what the hell I'm on about), some bikes have had them retrofitted. The problem is just that - they seem to be fitted willy nilly. Some owners have put up with this since 1999 and got no response from Suzuki.

So I want to hear from anyone with SV problems in the cold - you may have mistaken the problem to be "water in the fuel" - as it only happens when temps are low.
If enough of us get together, maybe, just maybe we can get something done about the situation - ideally retrofitting of all bikes with heaters - courtesy of Suzuki.

I figured I would write and let you know what a great job you are doing, still! thanks! I sent a letter last year and some pics and I wanted to let you know that everyone was so generous in there offering of places to stay on my excursion last june, I had alot of fun I ended up doing around 5000 miles in three weeks. 

I started out in Kansas, where i previously lived, headed over to the northern part of Arkansas and hit up the 7 highway that runs from the mark twain forest down to El Dorado Louisiana, if you have never taken to this particular stretch, I would highly recommend! Nothing but beautiful sweepers and cutthroat 20 mph curves, we flew for about 6 hours. It was amazing scenery and the traffic was pretty non-existent! Once into Louisiana we had to stop down at New Orleans and take in some blues, beads, and cajun, I wont mention just HOW much fun New Orleans really is. Just a note that although I had a wonderful time there it is more than a little too crowded for biking, my suggestion ditch the bike and walk. My buddy that I was riding with ended up dropping his bike in the middle of this ridiculously laid out parking garage, instead of kind gestures from passerby's all we got was a few cars honking and some really polite comments! MMm... 

We then headed for Panama City Beach where we endured the most hellish driving conditions, including rain, near hail, and wind gusts that I could hardly keep up with...On the way there I felt tired so I got some stay awake pills, if any of you use these on long journeys i would highly recommend checking them out before counting on them to take you 500 miles for the day. In my case I was not as intelligent and popped three yellow jackets I purchased at a gas station, an hour later I was light headed, seeing spots, shaking, and losing my stomach, Three hours later after laying down in a gas station and trying to hold down water, I felt considerably better and opted for the road once again...That night we camped out, stripped off the leathers and I admired my now red clothing underneath from all the rain on my red leathers... Not such a good day. 

We rode the next day into Panama beach. We tried getting a camping spot at a local koa camping area, when we were rudely turned down, saying that motorcycles were not allowed on the premises and would we please find accommodations else where.. So we did try and when we couldn't find any thing else we turned back to the koa and snuck in after the guard had retired for the evening... Spending a few days snorkeling and enjoying the night life we headed for Daytona beach, and then up the coast to Charlotte, where a buddy of mine lives and was eager to show me his unfaired sv, this was back when the svs was not available in the us and so he enjoyed seeing my half faired version as well... Charlotte has amazing roads and scenery that I would love to comment on If only I could remember the places we rode..Heading up to the Shanandoah Valley with hopes of beautiful mountains and trees we were once again greeted with an unspeakable storm, and fog that allowed 5-10 foot visibility... I still love the statement of motorists seeing motorcycle cruising along in this blessed weather... a death wish? I think just interesting stories... 

My trip concluded in Kingston New York where I worked for the rest of the summer. After this I decided in investing in a flip up windscreen because the strain on the neck from the stock screen is unbearable after a few hundred miles... I hope to ride from Santa Barbara back to Kingston in June,,... any takers! Jenn's email address is above!

I was at the Ally Pally show and I saw a stall selling cartoon caricatures of SV650's. I found their URL and if you go to the motorcycles section no.2 There's the SV they do mugs and T shirts and stuff. I thought this might be worth putting up on the site.

I have been trying to reach www.POLY26.com  in France. It has been mentioned on the site. They make a lower and radiator covers for the SV. I HAVE HAD NO LUCK REACHING THEM. I know they exist, but have just about given up! You can only get them by going to international web? I'm not very web savvy, and am reasonably new to computers. Please Kevin, I have no other recourse, do you have any advice? Contacts who have PERSONALLY dealt with them?
