CURRENT POSTINGS  FOR  JUNE  2001

29/06/01 -   I need your help

The time has come for me to ask you for help. You may know from postings within the Forum that Sat 30th June I'm participating in the British  Auto Cycle Union National Rally which runs from 14:00 on the 30th to 07:30 the following morning (Sunday 1st July). The objective is to cover as many map* miles as possible for the category of the event which you've entered (there are other rules that I won't go into). I'm doing the event (for 3rd time) with a mate who's running a BMW GS1100. We aim for a Silver award (400 to 500 map* miles), a Gold award at best and a finish at worst.

I am looking for your support in that I plan to raise money for MENCAP by doing the event. As well as looking for sponsorship locally to me I am asking any readers of this site who feel they would like to support me (and hence MENCAP) to donate a sum of money however small or large. I feel the best way to go about this is either:

1) make a donation directly to MENCAP using their secure online donation at  http://www.mencap.org.uk (follow the "make a donation" link) and drop me an email to say how much you donated and your name (so I can thank you personally!). Please include the word MENCAP in the email title. (This is my preffered option because its less work for me and you).

If you are outside the UK then you'll have to calculate the exchange rate and adjust your donation accordingly - use the Currency Converter at http://www.xe.com/ucc/

OR

2) send me an email pledging a sum of money and your name - I would then get back to you after the event and supply my postal address to where a cheque / postal order etc could be sent. I'll then collect all replies and make the combined donation to MENCAP. Please include the word MENCAP in the email title.

If you are outside the UK then option 1) above is by far the easiest way to donate.

As you know I charge nothing for the use of this site and make no money from it. If you've ever thought you'd like to say a small 'thanks' for the effort I put into sv650.org then now's your chance.......and I promise I won't ask for anymore money until this time next year! ; -)

I can be contacted at kevin@sv650.org.   I will post all details of amount raised.  If you're not interested in helping out thanks for reading this anyway.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

* map miles are distances between A and B specified by the organisers. In the vast majority of cases the actual road miles is always a lot more than map miles so the actual road miles covered will nearer 550-700 (depending on how many times I get lost).

27/06/01 -  TCP lower fairing info in reply to posting below - thanks to Roger mike.lewin@amec.com

Yes, they are from TCP. I ordered mine as a Suzuki part from Sturdeys in the UK and had it shipped to the States. The box (and instructions) still had the TCP logos and part numbers on them. I think TCP makes a lot of OEM plastic.

27/06/01 -  SV to get adjustable forks - thanks to Eneas eneas.rainey@ntlworld.com for this news

I tried to post this in the forum but kept getting the message: Server Timed Out  sorry about that, the guy who helps with hosting the site changed providers again and the DNS details for the Forum weren't propagated around too quickly.

After reading the note on MCN website I thought everyone should know that Suzuki intend to put adjustable front suspension (for preload) in all new bikes. It would be interesting to know if the adjusters can be used on older bikes.

27/06/01 -  Scottoiler touring version - more handy help, this time from Jumpy leepeacock@mac.com

Well you've heard it all before, but what can I say, it's a bloody brilliant site!  thanks Jumpy...

Thanks to David for his 'how to' on the touring Scottoiler and I hope he doesn't mind if I add a couple of enhancements of my own.

Firstly you can route the oil pipe behind the mud guard using plastic 'P' clips, the fixings for the HRC itself and the rear reflector as shown in 'soiler01' and 'soiler02'. The 'P' clips can be found in Halfords or any half decent hardware store, but you may have to drill them out a bit to suit the fixings.

Secondly, to make things a bit tidier, you can fix the pipe to the underside of the swing arm using the 'dispenser mounting sleeve' supplied with the kit as shown in 'soiler03'. Follow the instructions for using the superglue and you can't go wrong. Just make sure it really is clean, use the sand paper AND petrol (lighter fluid is best) and DON'T touch the cleaned area at all.

Hope someone finds this as useful as Davids original instructions were to me.  added to FAQ in the hope....

I've just received a T shirt ( £15 ) with a Blue SVS image and it's excellent. I've attached a scan of the item for info. 21/06/01 -   Comments and question about lower fairing - reply to kevin.a.smith@concert.com if you can help please

Just a note about the Suzuki lower fairing and seat cowl. I ordered mine (Black for a 1999 model) on 16 April (Yes, a Bank Holiday) and they were delivered on 19th April - Alpha Motorcycles in Leigh on Sea, Essex.

The fairings were easy to fit but the bolts that hold the fairing at the top, bolt to the frame using bolts that go through to the engine, these were hard to line up because as they were tightened the brackets kept turning - no real problem but it took several attempts to line up.

The only disappointment is that the seat cowl has a large gap all around it - I would have thought it should be a tighter fit - does anyone know if it can be adjusted?

I am very tempted with the undertray from FSD in France - it looks wicked, has anyone fitted one yet? any comments?

15/06/01 -  All the Suzuki paint colours in one place, SV's too - thanks very much to Ray rayosofsky@att.net

From time to time questions about paint matching come up in the forum. There is a company in the US, Color Rite, that does paint for automotive, motorcycle, and boats. In their web site

http://www.color-rite.com

they have look-up tables for bike paint by manufacturer, year, model, et. It seems that only the US colors are included in this look-up. However, they also have master lists by manufacturer. In the Suzuki list is every color (I think) Suzuki have ever made listed by color name. That table gives the Suzuki code as well as the Color Rite code(s) for their paint match.

I have used their Pearl Helios Red (2000, US SV red) touch-up paint and it is a perfect match. They sell paint in various forms and quantities.

I have thought about how to get this long list in searchable form (print it, scan/OCR it, put it into a document?), but have not had the time yet. But even
looking at it on their web site is not too tedious. I have done it a few times to answer color questions on
the forum. Maybe you have a better idea since the
information seems to be all there.

To see all the paint codes view sv_paint.htm

15/06/01 -   Update on Lower fairing ordering and wait... thanks to Paul zaknetonline@themutual.net

Just to add to Mike Lewin's post, I to ordered the Suzuki Fairing Lowers from Fowlers of Bristol on March 30. Come May 23, no sign of the  delivery. Fowlers called Suzuki, who had "no record of the order.....".

So, the item was re-ordered there and then, as apparently they were in stock at Suzuki (I wanted Black for my 2000 SVS). Today is June 10, and STILL NO SIGN!!!

Will let you know how it pans out. thanks....

11/06/01 -  An update on the request in the Forum for honest feedback from John Ryan john.ryan@dixonmotors.co.uk - an after Sales Manager for the Carnell Group

To place the context of this email I had asked John what company he represented after seeing his post in the Forum....Johns reply is pasted below.  So if you have any feedback you wish to send to John after reading the email his details are also shown below. Thanks to all who gave feedback to John following his initial request.

Your site has been an absolute Godsend. I have had a fantastic response to my original message. All of the replies have been constructive, well written and very obviously well thought out. All the replies have been passed on to my head office. I decided to approach the public in this way without first speaking to my head office. Since then, I have kept them fully informed and I am hoping that they are going to be as pleased as I am with the response.

I have no problem at all in telling you we are, and while I appreciate your offer to keepm this information confidential I am not afraid to tell you that I am an After Sales Manager for the Carnell Group. Yes, the same group who did so badly with Ride magazine and the now famous (or infamous) "Garages from Hell" programme from Granada.

As a group, Dixon/Carnell/Motor Cycle City are extremely concerned at the way the industry as a whole, and our group in particular are perceived by the public. I can assure you that Mr Paul Dixon and his son, Mr Simon Dixon are extremely concerned by the bad press. They have immediately implemented a massive training scheme for all staff, starting with the After sales staff. The very people who are at the front line. I was on the first such training scheme last week. I was at our Distribution and Support Centre (Head Office) in Thorne, Doncaster for two days taking part in a very severe and in-depth learning experience.  Already, new procedures and methods of operation are being put into place and implemented throughout the group. From the way the telephones are answered and the public greeted, to keeping them informed and calling them back when we promise, every aspect of customer relations is being improved. Oh yes, easy for me to say of course, and until it really starts to get used by ALL our staff on EVERY single occasion it is going to be hard to prove. However I really mean what I say, Paul and Simon Dixon are very genuine people. They have a deep love for motorcycling. You have seen for yourself how readily they both appeared in front of the cameras to face their critics. Very brave and very few other men would have been so open about their failings. They do care about their image and the service they offer.  And after all, this is a SERVICE industry and we are here to provide a SERVICE. We are not here to do the public a favour by serving them. On the contrary, it is the public who do U Sthe favour by using us. We in the industry tend to forget thatvery salient fact. The public do not need US, we desperately NEED the public.

New service check lists have been introduced throughout the group which each technician must carefully fill in and SIGN for every job he does. A copy is given to the customer and the mechanic must be available to discuss what he has done with the customer. No more just taking the money and telling the customer "Oh, your 'bike is outside somewhere. No, the mechanic is far too busy to talk to you!" All that has to stop. In future, when we make a mistake (which everyone does at times) or even if a customer thinks we have not done quite what we said we would do or what he expected us to do, we will immediately offer free 'health-check' of the 'bike in the customers presence so that he can see what we are doing and he can discuss it with the technician at the time and hopefully feel far more involved in the service process.

We are going to make ourselves much more accountable to the public. This is going to be a long process and much as I wish I could wave a magic wand and get it all sorted by tomorrow morning, the reality of life is that it is going to be a hard and long slog. But, with help from the public, just like your web members have given me this last two days, I know we will succeed. And the more input the better.  And if you, or any of your members feel that you could put your points and suggestions to me, or the company, more easily in a face to face meeting, I would be very happy to meet anyone.

E-mail me here at home or at work. Home e-mail of course you already know:- john.ryan3@virgin.net  Work is john.ryan@dixonmotors.co.uk

Thank you for your letter and I look forward to talking to you again soon. I intend to post updates on the web about how we are progressing as often as I can.

Regards,
John

11/06/01 -  Misfire & eventual solution - Many thanks to Chris Chris.Geyton@excellenceinbusiness.com for sending the info in for us..

Great site and excellent resource! thanks muchly..

I have had a problem now with a progressive misfire over the last couple of weeks. It started at the top of the rev range and gradually got worse. Originally it seemed to be worse when hot and then eventually I was  unable to rev above 5.5k revs.

Having hit rock bottom this weekend after numerous attempts to rectify the problem following previous advice from Jed (contributor to the site) to change the petrol pipes for sturdier items and check their routing  under the tank with no success I took the bike back to the dealer for a check and fix under its warranty. They also spent c3hrs trying to diagnose the  problem to no avail and when I turned up today at 5.30 to collect the bike they were still lost!

With 4 of us eventually suggesting solutions we considered that something may have been putting pressure on the air intake - At last we had stumbled on it - the foam sound proofing under the tank had broken free and gradually it had been sucked away from the tank eventually blocking the air intake when the throttle was opened and demanded more air.

So if folk have similar symptoms check the foam first before getting to the point of stripping the carbs and considering moving on the top end!

Finally, it is worth giving a mention to the workshop guys at Motor Cycle City Portsmouth who stayed until 6.30 this pm in an endeavour to solve the  problem. It was a level of service that I thought had disappeared in these days of the large superstores - If only their sales people had the same attitude and commitment to customer care!

11/06/01 -  Fellow SVers needs help - please drop him an email if you have any sound advice

Terry - sorry it's such a late posting but I have not been around to post any, let alone your, emails. How did you get on at the meeting?

After 18 mths my Suzi is still vibrating wildly.  It is a 99 Sv650 unfaired with 3200 miles on the clock. The vibration occurs throughout the rev range from idle to 9000.  Carnells the dealers say Suzuki have no problems with other bikes therefore there is no problem with mine!!!!!!!!!!.

Just recently,1 week ago it started staling under load and the AA said my carbs were out of sync (albeit it had just been serviced) by Arnolds m/cycles a suzi dealer. It has been back to them who very kindly balanced the carbs and cleared a load of crap out of them ?.YOU WONT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS............................................................................................

Hoping the problems were related I jumped on my machine to find the vibes were still around but it actually went 'great', for about 10 miles. I now have a meeting with the service manager at Carnell's Birmingham tomorrow Fri 1st June. At a recent bike meeting I asked other Sv riders if they had suffered num hands, feet, nuts etc but they appeared to be untroubled.

The AA man told me that there is an auto advance and retard unit on the Sv that adjusts the mixture????? if there is one could it stick or be faulty. I really need some solid info to throw at these people to sort my suzi out once and for all, CAN YOU HELP ME.PLEEEEEEEEEASE.

11/06/01 -  Are Suzuki lowers made by TCP? Mike mike.lewin@amec.com wants to know

Following a visit to the web site I took the advise of fellow SV riders and ordered a Suzuki lower on the 26/04/01 from Fowlers of Bristol. They said Delivery 7-10 days (wicked) get the bike looking great for the SUMMER RIDES . June 1st tomorrow and I am still waiting, Fowlers say the delay is with SUZUKI. So I phoned (old fashioned I know but I like the personal Touch of being able to get your hair of with someone). the Phone number for Suzuki is 01293 518000.

Is the Faring is coming from TCP ?? is it worth talking to them any help would be appreciated I think they are but if anyone knows for sure please let Mike know..

I live in Canada, city of Kitchener that is located in the province of Ontario. Great work on the webpage!!! :-) ta....    I have been following your webpage since '99, and frequent it regularly for new information. I own a 2000 SV650S in blue. I have done some small modifications to it such as a Tech Line lower fairing, Race Tech front fork springs, Devil slip on pipe, racing blue pegs, and Bridgestone BT010 tires. I love the SV.... not the greatest in top end when compared to the inline four's but great coming out of the corners.... and I love the twin rumbling sound, and the SVS looks spectacular!!!!  Attached are a couple pics of my bike....
